You can also pay extra for a model with always-connected 3G wireless , a feature that none of the other e-reader makers offer.
The Kindle Paperwhite is now waterproof, for reading at the beach or in the bath, and also features Bluetooth for streaming audiobooks. It weighs 6. It has no headphone port, speakers, or navigation buttons. The screen is flush with the bezel, where most comparable models have recessed screens. It also has no physical inputs or controls other than the Micro-USB charging port and power button along the bottom edge.
Controls for features such as screen brightness and airplane mode are now easily accessible by tapping the top of the screen, then selecting the Settings menu.
The screen is evenly lit across its entire surface, and the text is incredibly crisp. Amazon also got the small details right: Tapping to call up a footnote, for example, opens it on the current page instead of taking you to a separate page, and you can dismiss the footnote with a simple tap. All of the ebook readers we tested allow you to use OverDrive to borrow free ebooks from your local library. The Kobo Clara HD, as with other modern Kobos, also has seamless OverDrive integration; some other readers require a third-party software client running on a computer to transfer the files to the ebook reader.
The reader worked just fine when we took it out, although we were surprised how much water came out of the Micro-USB port when we shook it. We could even hear water sloshing around inside, but after a few minutes of standing upright to dry, the moisture was gone. Amazon has finally added the ability to play audiobooks from Audible, the audiobook company it owns, to the Kindle Paperwhite. The feature works well though, and if you have both the ebook and audiobook version of a title, you can switch between reading and listening wherever you left off.
At Ars Technica, Valentina Palladino agrees with our findings. PCMag has a great article that explains the process. The body is made of a similar black plastic, although we like the unique recessed dot pattern on the back that provides some grip. Like the Paperwhite, it lacks physical page-turn buttons; unlike the Paperwhite, it isn't waterproof and lacks Bluetooth.
This diminishes the amount of blue light the screen puts off as the day progresses, which some people suggest helps you sleep better at night. You can even turn it so the Kobo is in landscape orientation with the buttons underneath the screen although the homepage only works in portrait. We found the buttons to click crisply and a bit loudly. The page turning is as responsive as on any other reader, with no lag. If you prefer, you can tap the screen to go back and forth, but the buttons are the main reason to pay the extra money.
The 7-inch screen is an inch bigger than that of the Kobo Clara HD or the Kindle Paperwhite but the same as the Oasis , and it has the same dpi resolution. It is possible to read magazines in PDF format if your magazine of choice provides PDF digital editions, but the experience is unlikely to be smooth or easy see 'PDF files on ebook readers', below.
While it's handy that Kindles allow you to read magazines, their black-and-white screens mean images will lose some impact. But if you're only interested in the words, it's a useful feature to have. The best way to read digital magazines is on a tablet, with apps such as Google Play, Readly and Apple Newsstand all offering premium magazines.
PDF files are commonly used in a work environment. They can include images, graphics and interactive buttons, and can be password protected. Both Kobo and Kindle devices accept PDF files, but because ebook readers aren't as powerful as tablets, the process of swiping through image-heavy documents can sometimes be sluggish.
If you're reading a PDF that contains lots of images, you'll have a better experience using an ebook reader with a large screen. The Kobo Forma has the biggest screen on the market, at eight inches. If you're reading on a smaller device, such as the regular Kindle, turning the reader to landscape orientation can improve things, and you can also try zooming in.
Kobo ebook readers offer a fairly basic experience when it comes to viewing PDF files. You can expect some slowdown if you're opening a large file, and in some instances we've found that margins eat up a fair chunk of display space. You can manually use the zoom slider to improve things, but it can be fiddly. This feature allows you to email documents to your device so you can easily read them later.
PDF files can also be converted to the AZW format see below , meaning they'll work more smoothly and enable more features such as text-to-speech and the ability to change the font size.
