You are not alone in thinking that. And in recent years hard drive suppliers have taken back control of the definition of GB, so now when you buy a GB hard drive, you get ,,, bytes instead of the ,,, bytes of old. They say it makes more sense to the consumer, but long time IT guys like me think they've simply been robbed of 36,,, bytes!

It starts off really really simple, but can all of a sudden seem complicated and people just switch off. But always up for a challenge, here goes:. We people mostly count with ten digits, 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and so this system of counting numbers is called base When we run out of digits more than 9 we add a new column, 10,11,12,13, Counting in 10s is probably explained by having 10 fingers also called digits.

Computers use electronic switches to count. Think about a light switch. This gives it a way of representing two digits, 0 and 1. And this is enough to count:. The gives each successive column a base value of 2,4,8,16,32,64,,,, and so on.

As the numbers get bigger we start to abbreviate them with k kilo , m mega , g giga , t tera. However, there is nothing forcing us, as challengers to specify things using k convention. If people felt it would be less confusing to explicitly set a new lower limit of , bytes, then perhaps nobody would get confused.

The confusion has stemmed simply from the limit being expressed as kb and the historic definition of what a kb is. Of course, a lower limit may not be welcome, and I think Geralds image serves perfectly to illustrate how every byte can be precious for images with fine details and elegant tonal graduations.

Not all imaging software is created equal. Two different applications could take the same full sized file and produce an x rendering into a file size of say kb. One of them could be a high quality rendering with few artefacts, while the other could be littered with compression artefacts that destroy the tonal beauty of the image. It all comes down to the quality of the software. The kb limit serves to level the playing field somewhat by allowing higher quality renderings to be produced even when using less efficient software.
